Salerno and its province

Salerno, located on the Tyrrhenian coast of southern Italy, boasts a rich and ancient history dating back to Roman times. Originally a Roman colony known as Salernum, it acquired increasing importance in the Middle Ages, particularly under the Longobards and later the Normans. Between the 9th and 11th centuries, Salerno was home to the famous Schola Medica Salernitana, considered the first and most important medical school in medieval Europe. This helped consolidate the city's reputation as a centre of knowledge and care. Over the following centuries, Salerno came under the control of various powers, including the Angevins, the Aragons and finally the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies, before becoming part of unified Italy in the 19th century.

The city was also a prominent place during World War II, briefly serving as the capital of Italy in 1944, when the government moved there during the Allied occupation.

Today, Salerno is a vibrant coastal city that combines historical heritage and modern life, and is also known for its proximity to the Amalfi Coast.

The Province of Salerno is one of the largest in the Campania region, known for the variety of its landscapes: from the spectacular cliffs of the Amalfi Coast to the archaeological sites of Paestum and the Cilento National Park. The province combines cultural richness and natural beauty, offering numerous historical sites, fascinating villages and breathtaking coastal and mountain scenery.

University of Salerno and CUS Salerno

The University of Salerno has ancient roots dating back to the Middle Ages, when the city was home to the Schola Medica Salernitana, considered the first medical school in Europe. Although that institution later disappeared, the modern university was officially refounded in 1944, initially as the Faculty of Magisterium. It became a state university in 1968 and gradually expanded to include faculties such as Law, Engineering, Economics, Medicine and many others. Today, the University of Salerno is one of the most important in southern Italy. The main campus is located in Fisciano, with a second campus in Baronissi, both modern and well-equipped.

The university is known for its commitment to research, innovation and student services, welcoming thousands of students from all over Italy and abroad.

CUS Salerno (Salerno University Sports Centre) is the university's official sports centre. It plays a key role in promoting sport and physical activity among students and university staff. CUS Salerno offers numerous sports disciplines, including athletics, football, volleyball, martial arts and fitness training. It also organises competitions, tournaments and recreational activities, contributing to university life and the well-being of students. As part of the national network of university sports centres (CUSI), it also participates in inter-university events at regional and national levels.
