Salerno and Its Province
Salerno, located on the Tyrrhenian coast in southern Italy, has a rich and ancient history that dates back to Roman times. Originally a Roman colony known as Salernum, it grew in importance during the Middle Ages, particularly under the Lombards and later the Normans. During the 9th to 11th centuries, Salerno was home to the famous Schola Medica Salernitana, considered the first and most important medical school in medieval Europe. This helped the city gain a reputation as a center of knowledge and healing.
In later centuries, Salerno came under the control of various powers, including the Angevins, the Aragonese, and eventually the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies, before becoming part of unified Italy in the 19th century. The city was also a significant location during World War II, briefly serving as the capital of Italy in 1944 when the government relocated there during the Allied occupation.
Today, Salerno is a vibrant coastal city known for its mix of historical heritage and modern life, as well as its proximity to the Amalfi Coast.
The Province of Salerno is one of the largest in the Campania region, known for its diverse landscapes—from the dramatic cliffs of the Amalfi Coast to the ancient ruins of Paestum and the Cilento National Park. The province blends cultural richness with natural beauty, offering a wide range of historical sites, charming villages, and scenic coastal and mountain areas.
University of Salerno and CUS Salerno
The University of Salerno (Università degli Studi di Salerno) has ancient roots that date back to the Middle Ages, when the city was home to the Schola Medica Salernitana, considered the first medical school in Europe. Although that institution eventually disappeared, the modern University of Salerno was officially re-established in 1944, initially as a faculty of education. It became a state university in 1968 and gradually expanded to include faculties such as law, engineering, economics, medicine, and more.
Today, the University of Salerno is one of the most important universities in southern Italy. Its main campus is located in Fisciano, with a secondary campus in Baronissi, both modern and well-equipped. The university is known for its commitment to research, innovation, and student services, attracting thousands of students from across Italy and abroad.
CUS Salerno (Centro Universitario Sportivo di Salerno) is the university’s official sports center. It plays a key role in promoting sports and physical activities among students and university staff. CUS Salerno offers a wide range of sports disciplines, including athletics, football, volleyball, martial arts, and fitness training. It also organizes competitions, tournaments, and recreational activities, contributing to student life and well-being on campus. As part of the national network of university sports centers (CUSI), it also participates in inter-university events at regional and national levels.
